I’m heading out on another adventure, but this time my trip isn’t related to running (gasp!). My destination today is sunny Palm Springs, CA to attend the BNB Paribas Open. For those who aren’t familiar with this tournament, it’s the largest two-week tennis event outside of the four majors (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open), and is held annually at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
It will be my second year attending the tournament and I’m looking forward to spending time basking in the sun watching my favorite player. I’m often asked if I play tennis, and truth be told, not as much as I would like—I watch it much more than I play.
Another travel destination provides the opportunity to donate to a local organization as part of Small Change, an initiative I started to contribute to a nonprofit organization in each of the cities I visit for a race or an adventure.
Given that I have dogs on my mind lately (okay, I always have dogs on my mind), deciding what organization to donate to was pretty easy. I gave $25 to Animal Samaritans, an animal welfare organization committed to eliminating the euthanasia of adoptable animals. The organization’s tagline is “Improving the lives of animals & people” and that’s just what they do through their diverse services and programs. I can’t wait to adopt a dog from a similar organization in the Portland area to improve my life and gain a running buddy.

Are you traveling for a race or an adventure? Join the Small Change movement and together our Small Change can add up to something good for communities. I recently revamped the Small Change section and to celebrate, I will personally donate an additional $10 to every Small Change story (organization) submitted through April 2015.
And speaking of dogs, do you run with one? What kind of dogs make the best running buddy?
