Montrail Molokini Flip-Flops ($60)
It’s been a LONG time since I’ve done a gear review, so it’s plenty time I get on it. Since I haven’t purchased any new running apparel or gear lately due to my recent (un)employment status, I chose to review a product that I already own—Montrail Molokini Flip-Flops (men’s version is the Molokai). Though this review may be a bit bias because I will tell you upfront that I absolutely LOVE these flip-flops.
Let’s just say that the running and comfort gods are watching over us. These are hands down, the best flips-flops I’ve ever owned—the best shoes I’ve ever owned. If I could live in these year-round I would. Wait. I do, even in the rainy Pacific Northwest.
I was first introduced to the Molokini’s in 2005 by massage therapist. At the time, I was struggling with Achilles Tendonitis and she suggested them for their superior support and thought that they would be good for me, particularly when getting out of bed (outside of running, my tendonitis was the most agitated with my first step in the morning). I’m pretty sure that these flip-flops were the key to my recovery and running again. You could say they have the magic touch.
The Molokini’s are thermo-moldable and require a quick trip to the oven before wearing them. Instructions indicate to place them in the oven on 250 for three minutes and then stand with your weight equally balanced for two minutes. And then they are ready to go.
I’m never without my Molokini’s—they travel with me wherever I go. I always wear them around the house and they are the very last thing that I take off before a race or run and the first thing I put on after time on the trails. Due to the solid grid on the bottom, I’ve even worn them hiking on rocky trails in Hawaii and Australia.
While some may sneer at the $60 price tag, I’d say that these flip-flops are worth every penny. Consider them a gift to your feet and a reward after a hard day of playing outside. There’s no half sizes, so I went down a full size from my size 9 running shoes and they fit perfectly. I’ve heard that some people have gone up a size too and have been just fine.
