What was your last race? Where was it located? What are you passionate about?
I typically don’t start blog posts off with questions, but today is special. Today is #GivingTuesday, a global movement designed to be the charitable answer to holiday retail spending (think Black Friday, Cyber Monday). Last year over $117 million was raised online for nonprofits to help make the world a better place. The appetite for giving is strong.
My ask of you today is to answer these three questions and then give “thanks” to your race city by joining together for Small Change.
What’s Small Change? The idea is small change, be it $5, $10, $15, or more adds up to big impact for organizations that take on issues we’re passionate about, be it environmental conservation, animal rights, or food recovery and assistance, among others. Think of it as a way to leave a personal legacy in our race communities. Since founding Small Change in July 2014, over $4,800 has been raised for nonprofits across the US and internationally.
Here’s how Small Change works:
- Choose a nonprofit meaningful to you in your race city or state
- Donate directly to the organization (whatever amount you choose)
- Fill out the short form to share your donation story
The action I take next is what makes the initiative special—unique to the racing and giving community. I feature your organization in blog posts and social media to give your nonprofit of choice added awareness and publicity—think of it as doubling your impact! Here’s an example of how I’ve highlighted a Small Change beneficiary in the past: Deschutes Land Trust: Collaborating to Conserve.
Today let’s celebrate our communities that annually open their trails, roads, and doors to runners (and adventurers) near and far. It doesn’t take much to make a difference; for as little as the price of a fancy cup of coffee (about $5), your small change can add up to something good.
