One of the really cool things about Small Change, an initiative to give back to our race and adventure cities, is I keep tabs on what the recipient organizations are up to through social media and other means. I’m continuing to learn about nonprofits that are changing lives, empowering our neighbors, and making our communities stronger.
And Colorado-based YouthRoots has an incredible update to share. The organization was selected for a special 100 for 100 Campaign this holiday season. If 100 supporters donate $100 before January 1, they will receive a $10,000 matching gift—talk about small change adding up to big impact!
YouthRoots empowers high school students to change the world through the experiential process of philanthropy. Learn more about the good work they do in my interview with Lauren Czajka from February, the then Director of Operations for the organization.
Lauren is now the Executive Director and when I heard YouthRoots was in the running for a grand matching gift, I reached out to her again to find out more about the campaign and what it all means for the organization.
What is the 100 for 100 Campaign and how’s it going?
YouthRoots received a matching challenge from a passionate donor to help us reach our holiday campaign goals and increase our network. If 100 supporters donate $100 (or more) to YouthRoots before January 1, we will receive a $10,000 matching gift. So far, we have 38 of the 100 donations that we need to unlock the $10,000 with three weeks left in the campaign.
Why should people donate to YouthRoots?
We are an extremely effective nonprofit that teaches teens how to improve their communities. Seventy-nine percent of teens want to engage in their communities, but only 26% actually do. This gap is largely because youth feel like their voice isn’t valued; that’s a wasted resource of 21,000,000 teenagers.
YouthRoots teaches teens how to engage and make real impact both during and beyond our program. Additionally, the work we do has lasting impact. Five years after the program, our alumni tell us what they learned from our program continues to impact them in our five core focus areas—Leadership, Civic Engagement, Strengths, Passions, and Empathy—96% of the time.
What would the $10,000 do for YouthRoots?
The $10,000 would send 21 teens through our life-changing leadership program. YouthRoots is 100% free for all participants because we don’t want ability to pay to be a barrier for this opportunity. The direct cost of sending one student through the program is $470, so as an organization we make it our mission to fund all of our participants.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Please spread some holiday cheer this season by donating $100 today, helping unlock this significant $10,000 gift!
If you live in Colorado (or even if you don’t) here’s an opportunity to support an organization truly doing innovative work and making a difference in the lives of young adults—young adults who one day will be leading our country. If you can’t afford $100 on your own, consider teaming up with friends, family, or your workplace. Please share this post with your network. Thank you.
